Teek Paal Kó

Muchos los confundieron con sirenas porque nunca los habían visto. Los mayas creían que si el manatí nadaba contra-corriente las sequías llegarían.

Cuando Cristóbal Colon llegó al nuevo mundo miró en el mar a unos animales que jamás había visto y los confundió con sirenas. Eran los manatíes que le daban la bienvenida. Porque el Teek paal kó (manatí niño del mar) no conocía todavía la maldad del hombre. Esta es la leyenda del teek.

La llegada de Teek Paal Kó
En la isla maya de Cuzamil (hoy conocido popularmente como Cozumel) vivía la tribu Kohunlich, hombres y mujeres tranquilos, trabajadores y muy felices porque disfrutaban lo que la tierra y el mar les proporcionaban.

Latribu era gobernada por el cacique Nachán Can y tenía una hija Zazil Há a la que le encantaba nadar en el mar. Un día cuando estaba buscando conchas en el fondo del agua vio a un extraño animal, que se encontraba atrapado en una de las redes de los pescadores.

Como era muy cariñoso, dócil y pequeño la princesa lo liberó y lo llevó a Chactemal (lugar donde bajan las lluvias) y que ahora conocemos como la Bahía de Chetumal en el estado de Quintana Roo.

Era un bebé manatí al que llamaron Teek Paal Kó porque parecía un niño juguetón, y dejaba que todos los de la tribu disfrutaran de su presencia y compañía. Ya sacaba su cara rechoncha para verlos, ya salpicaba el agua para mojarlos.

Creció y se convirtió en Mato, el magnífico
Teek Paal Kó comenzó a crecer y muy pronto su tamaño fue mayor que las canoas de los pescadores, por eso el cacique Nachán Ca lo fue a ver y quedó tan sorprendido por la dulzura del animal que solo gritaba “mato, mato, mato”, que en la lengua maya significa Magnífico. Por eso se dice que se llama manatí.

Los niños de la tribu jugaban todos los días con Teek, el noble animal salía del agua y se acercaba a la orilla para que pudieran subir en su lomo y pasearlos por todo el mar. Era como otro niño más de la aldea.

El manatí se comunicaba con los niños mediante un chillido como de bebé, porque los manatíes no poseen cuerdas bucales.

Teek Paal Kó fue abandonado.
Pero un día, unos hombres de vestimenta extraña llegaron del mar, eran los conquistadores españoles que sometieron al pueblo de Zazil Há, aunque opusieron resistencia y pelearon. Los Kohuinlich huyeron hacia la selva vencidos por las armas de fuego de los extranjeros.

El manatí se quedó solo, su llanto se escuchaba hasta donde Zazil Há y su tribu estaban. De sus ojos salieron dos lágrimas. Y una tarde cuando comía yerbas a la orilla, uno de los conquistadores se acercó a Teek Paal Kó, y como estaba acostumbrado a las caricias de los indios siguió comiendo tranquilamente. Nunca espero que ese extraño le arrojara una lanza.

El manatí descubrió ese día que no todos los hombres eran iguales. Por eso desde ese momento, temeroso de que le hicieran daño, decidió vivir bajo el agua, solo salía a la superficie para respirar.

Volvió a su lugar de origen. Y un día se desató una terrible tormenta, el cielo se oscureció, el río que comunicaba a la laguna con el mar se desbordó y Teek Paal fue arrastrado por la corriente. Pero una figura muy parecida a él se le acercó ¡era su mamá!, Una enorme manatí a quien la diosa Izt Chel (diosa de la fertilidad y la luna) había mandado para rescatarlo.

La manatí abrazó y protegió a su cría como lo hace una mujer con sus hijos. Le ayudo a salir y nunca más se le volvió a ver. Había regresado a su lugar de origen, donde nada y aunque sigue siendo noble ya no se acerca a los humanos.

El hombre, el peor depredador El ser humano es la mayor amenaza para estos animales. Los manatíes son animales muy lentos y carentes de agresividad, esto los hace presa fácil de los cazadores.

Actualmente el número de muertes, naturales, accidentales y ocasionadas por el hombre es mayor que el número de nacimientos. La población de Manatíes se estima en solo 2.600 individuos.

La distribución del manatí en México está limitada al Sureste y abarca las zonas costeras del Golfo, desde Veracruz hasta Chetumal. Además, vive también en ríos, lagunas, esteros y cenotes. La especie de manatí que se encuentra en esta región es la única capaz de sobrevivir tanto en ambientes de agua dulce, de agua salada y marinos.

Rosca de Reyes / Three Kings Traditional Mexican Bread

Como ya sabemos, la rosca de Reyes es un postre que se consume el día 6 de Enero, conmemorando que los Reyes Magos han encontrado el pesebre donde ha nacido Dios. Por la mañana los niños reciben regalos, que los reyes les dejan durante la madrugada de la víspera en sus casas, en representación de los presentes que los Reyes Magos le llevaron al Niño Jesús. Esta es una costumbre del cristianismo, y la historia cuenta que de Persia salieron los tres Reyes Magos para ir a adorar al Niño Jesús. Y según lo narra Marco Polo en su libro El Millón: “Los tres Reyes de la comarca se pusieron de viaje para adorar a un profeta recién nacido y llevarle tres ofrendas: oro, incienso y mirra. Si el profeta tomaba el oro, era rey terreno; si tomaba el incienso era un Dios; y si tomaba la mirra, era un médico. Sus nombres: Melchor, Gaspar y Baltazar, tres Reyes Magos ataviados con llamativas vestimentas que salieron de Oriente y que hoy con el paso de los años forman parte de las celebraciones decembrinas. Cargados de regalos, oro, incienso y mirra, especialmente para el niño.
Y para conmemorar esto, nació la costumbre de partir la rosca, que se origina en la Edad Media. En Francia comenzó a celebrarse esta fecha, cristianizando la costumbre pagana de “elegir un rey de las fiestas” Inspirado en el Eclesiastés, la gente se reunía en la noche familiar alrededor de una rosca de pan dulce adornada con azúcar y frutas cristalizadas, en la que habían escondido un haba, como símbolo de la huída de la persecución del rey Herodes. Actualmente el haba ha sido sustituida por una figurilla de plástico escondida en el pan. Cada persona corta una rebanada de rosca, y el cuchillo simboliza el peligro en el que se halla el niño Jesús. La persona que tiene la suerte de encontrar la figurilla al cortar el pan, es, según la costumbre, anfitrión de otra celebración posterior: Por ejemplo en México es el 2 de Febrero el día de la Candelaria, y la tradición observa que esta persona debe confeccionar un “ropón” al niño Jesús. Es decir, vestirlo de gala y ofrecer a sus invitados los tradicionales tamales, hechos de maíz, (el alimento prehispánico por excelencia) y chocolate, “el alimento de los dioses”.
La costumbre de partir la rosca de Reyes es una fusión de diversas culturas a través del tiempo que da sentido y origen a esta hermosa tradición. Esta tradición llega a México durante la Colonia.
Aquí en MXLQ te damos una de las recetas para preparar la Rosca de Reyes:
Ingredientes
500 g de harina
40 g de levadura de panadero
1 litro y medio de leche
3 huevos
120 g de mantequilla
10 g de sal
frutas escarchadas
100 g de azúcar
1 cucharada de ron
1 cucharada de agua de azahar
ralladura de naranja y limón

Preparación

Se prepara una masa con la levadura y con la mitad hytde la harina y 1 litro de leche tibia. Con todo ello se amasa hasta que se hace una bola y se tapa con un paño con la intención de dejar reposar. No olvidarse de que debe ser un lugar cálido y sin corrientes. Aparte se baten los huevos con la mantequilla derretida, ron, sal, azúcar, ½ litro de leche, agua de azahar y ralladura de frutas escarchadas. Se une a la harina restante y se amasa lo suficiente. A todo esto se le incorpora la masa anterior que estaba reposando. Se amasa todo junto enérgicamente hasta conseguir una masa fina y elástica. Se forma una bola, se pone en un recipiente, se tapa de nuevo (por segunda vez) con un paño y se repite la operación de reposo durante tres horas, hasta que llegue a doblar su tamaño. Tras este tiempo de reposo se amasa ligeramente. Se pone en la bandeja del horno engrasada, se le da forma de corona, primero enrollándola y luego juntando las puntas. Se tapa con un paño y se deja subir (crecer) otras dos horas. Se pinta con huevo batido y finalmente se adorna con frutas escarchadas, se introduce la sorpresa (puede ser un haba o una pequeña joya o un muñequito de plastico) y se mete al horno previamente calentado, a una temperatura media-fuerte, durante unos 40 minutos.

Ingredients

How to Entertain Kids while Babysitting

Fussy kids? Bored babies or toddlers? If you need help entertaining the kids when you are baby sitting,read this!

1 Never leave the kids alone. They might draw on walls or get into something they shouldn’t be in. Keep them occupied and bring lots of fun games.
2 Make a Fun Bag. In the fun bag you could have candy (if they are allowed), movies, coloring pages, stickers, books, games, and crafts, as well as various things for you when the kids go to sleep. The things in the Fun bag should consider the age of the children you are babysitting, as very young children will appreciate different things to older children.

When the kids start to get fussy or antsy, ask them if they want to color / do a project / play a game. They say yes and, voila! Fun bag!

Play with the children. They won’t like it if you don’t play. So, take out the thing they want to do. If you are doing a project or coloring and you have messy toddlers, let them help put down newspaper or a plastic mat to protect floors and tables. Have fun and they will be able to tell and enjoy your presence more.

For projects; when making things if you can make it edible it’s good. Some finger painting recipes are edible. (Vanilla yogurt with food coloring)No-bake cookies are delicious and easy!

Little kids also love doing things for themselves. Let them pour or stir their own drinks, make their own peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, or help you make cookies. It helps pass the time while teaching them skills, and they will feel more involved and grown up instead of you taking over everything.

Put a chair by the sink for the kids to stand on, and let them help you wash the dishes. (Take out sharp objects like forks hiding in the suds so they don’t get poked accidentally.) Being allowed to help you wash the dishes can be a reward for young children.

Be patient with the children if they start getting bored or miserable, show them the things they have brought and encourage them to play. If they don’t want to do something in particular, find something else for them to do!

Take them outside! Ride bikes, go to the park, walk the dog, anything outdoors will run their energy out! Make sure to be very careful because the outdoors also has many hazards.

Play fun age appropriate games. Don’t do something that is to old for the kids because you want parents to want you to come back. Also, when playing with the child, be sure to not be rough with them especially when you have a younger age group. This may turn them off and somebody could get hurt. Musical chairs is a fun game appropriate of all ages. The kids would love that. But make sure the chairs are small enough for the kids.

Make or buy play-dough. If you have a recipe that doesn’t involve cooking on the stove, you can have the kids help make it. If you don’t have the materials needed for play-dough, you can make something called Ooblek with simply water and cornstarch. This is especially good because it doesn’t involve dangerous, hot ovens or sharp objects. Do this outside of course, as it is extremely messy, but that’s the fun of it! Ooblek is a solid and a liquid. It is really fun!!

Pick a movie appropriate for the age group you’re babysitting. Pop some popcorn and put the popcorn in individual bowls for each child (if they are young). Give each child a ticket awhile before the movie. Be the ticket-taker at the door to the room, and give each child a bowl of popcorn. Then turn off the lights and start the movie!

Make a tent! Use chairs and big blankets. Fill the inside with pillows and blankets. After it’s made, you can tell (or read!) stories. If it’s possible, make it over a TV, so the TV is inside, and you have a movie theater! If the children are 4 or older (and less likely to make a mess), pop some popcorn to get the great movie atmosphere!

Remember, toddlers love anything that keeps them active. If everyone’s bored, take out some scarves, turn on the music, and dance! If you have a lot of children, play freeze tag, or a team game where EVERYONE needs to be involved.For most kids under the age of 5, hide and seek may have some hazards.

If the child feels unwell, and the parents aren’t available, consider the situation. Do they have a slight tummy ache or are they bleeding? If they are bleeding or anything as bad, take them to A&E, whereas, if they have a slight tummy ache, tuck them into bed and read them stories, or draw with them.

Firstly I would suggest that you need to give them quiet a lot of attention, many of them get bored and that is when why they become naughty. Try playing games that you think children might find exciting. Older children about age 10 may enjoy board games or things that are not so energetic that younger kids may like, ask them what they like playing first because some children may not like things that are suggested to play.

Google y sus aplicaciones educativas
La mayoría de alumnos utiliza Google sólo como motor de búsqueda, dejando de lado las infinitas posibilidades educativas, que nos ofrece este buscador.
Veamos a continuación 10 aplicaciones de Google, que de seguro serán útiles tanto a profesores como a alumnos.

Google Docs: es sin duda una de las herramientas más novedosas del paquete Google por asumir las características de la web 2.0 en un campo poco adecuado para ello: los procesadores de texto y los programas de presentación (ambos muy utilizados en educación). Funciona sin instalar programa alguno, no hay que pagar licencia de uso y no necesita disco local de almacén para los documentos que genera.
Estas características lo convierten en un software ideal para su uso dentro del ámbito escolar. Para poder aprovechar la enorme potencialidad de este recursos, el profesor debe calibrar correctamente las posibilidades del centro y del alumnado, así como conocer en profundidad las funciones que esta herramienta ofrece.

Google Site: es otra de las herramientas de Google. Podríamos decir que es una mezcla de blog y de wiki. Permite a cualquier usuario hacer su propia web sin necesidad de conocimientos de programación. El acceso se realiza a través de la cuenta de Gmail o de una cuenta de Google . Es una herramienta perfecta para hacer una web colaborativa.
Google Calendar:, es un calendario en línea: la herramienta de uso personal que mayor orientación al trabajo en grupo tiene. La posibilidad de compartir nuestra agenda con otras personas si queremos, y la facultad para añadir eventos e invitaciones en esos calendarios, son facultades de enorme interés en la organización del aula y la administración del centro educativo.
Con Google Calendar se pueden crear diferentes calendarios para poder organizar inicialmente por separado las distintas actividades que el profesor, el alumno o el centro se plantean en su actividad docente. Partiendo de un calendario principal asociado con la cuenta (y que verán las personas que lo busquen) se pueden generar todos los calendarios secundarios que deseen, para asignarlos a los diferentes módulos a tratar. Se puede disponer de un calendario para cada curso, para cada departamento, para la asociación de padres, para la formación de profesores, para las actividades extraescolares o para el centro de recursos. Estos calendarios se pueden compartir, ya sea públicamente o con sólo un grupo específico de personas. Todo ello en un único lugar.
La herramienta de Mapas de Google es una aplicación que posibilita la creación de mapas propios, mapas marcarlos con punteros, lineas, áreas, mapas con textos, fotos y vídeos. Estos mapas se crean a partir de mapas ofrecidos por el sistema a través de búsquedas, y que de modo sencillo van personalizando. Google Fast Flip es una revista de estilo de visualización de los artículos populares de algunos de los sitios web más populares en Internet. El contenido es elaborado desde medios de comunicación como The Washington Post, Popular Science, The Nueva York Times y Reuters. La pantalla de visualización hace que sea fácil de navegar rápidamente . Google Fast Flip puede ser un recurso útil para los estudiantes de ciencias sociales y sus profesores.
Google Libros: Ofrece un índice de millones de libros y publicaciones. Los libros y artículos que se encuentran bajo dominio público se pueden ver, leer y descargar en su totalidad, los títulos con derechos de autor se pueden leer pero no se pueden descargar.

Google Image Swirl es una herramienta de búsqueda de imágenes destinadas a ayudar a perfeccionar y modificar la búsqueda de imágenes. Para usar Google Image Swirl, introduzca su término de búsqueda como lo haría en el servicio de búsqueda de imágenes normal. Los resultados de su búsqueda se mostrarán en una cuadrícula similar a aquella con la que probablemente esté familiarizado.
La rueda de busqueda Google es una herramienta de refinamiento de búsquedas que ayuda visualmente a los estudiantes a perfeccionar y modificar sus búsquedas en la web.
La rueda de busqueda Google muestra el término de búsqueda inicial, como el centro de una red de seis a ocho ramas de los términos de búsqueda relacionados, si hacemos clic en cualquiera de los términos relacionados veremos los resultados de esos términos.

Google Académico: Este buscador especializado de Google pone al alcance del usuario una amplia gama de trabajos de investigación de diversas áreas. Sin lugar a dudas, la herramienta, conformada por algoritmos diseñados para el entorno académico, facilita la realización de trabajos de calidad por parte de estudiantes, científicos, investigadores, docentes y público en general. Para finalizar, Google Reader es probablemente la herramienta que exige un nivel de manejo más avanzado o por decirlo de otro modo, de mayor inmersión en el mundo digital de recursos educativos. Permite hacer un seguimiento de los sitios web favoritos y ver todas las actualizaciones desde un único punto de forma fácil y práctica. Se puede hacer una comprobación constante sobre el contenido nuevo que pueda haber en los blogs y sitios de noticias que tengamos marcados como favoritos. Independientemente de si un sitio se actualiza diariamente o mensualmente, podemos estar tranquilos de recibir lo último que acontezca y de que no te perderemos nada.
Centralizar todos nuestros sitios favoritos en un solo lugar tiene un enorme potencialidad en el proceso de enseñanza-aprendizaje. Es como una bandeja de entrada personalizada para toda la web. Además tiene una enorme componente colaborativa, pues con la página pública de Google Reader podemos compartir nuestros elementos favoritos con otras personas, con enviarles simplemente a los vínculos correspondientes. Con un clic en el icono de compartir en cualquier elemento, éste aparecerá instantáneamente en nuestra página pública.

It’s Google’s world, we’re just teaching in it.

Now, we can use it a little more easily. With classes, homework, and projects–not to mention your social life–time is truly at a premium for all teachers, so why not take advantage of the wide world that Google has to offer?

From super-effective search tricks to Google tools specifically for education to tricks and tips for using Gmail, Google Docs, and Google Calendar, these tricks will surely save you some precious time.

Search Tricks
These search tricks can save you time when researching online for your next project or just to find out what time it is across the world, so start using these right away.
Convert units. Whether you want to convert currency, American and metric units, or any other unit, try typing in the known unit and the unknown unit to find your answer (like “how many teaspoons in a tablespoon” or “10 US dollars in Euros”).
Do a timeline search. Use “view:timeline” followed by whatever you are researching to get a timeline for that topic.
Get around blocked sites. If you are having problems getting around a blocked site, just type “cache:website address” with website address being the address of the blocked site to use Google’s cached copy to get where you are going.
Use a tilde. Using a tilde (~) with a search term will bring you results with related search terms.
Use the image search. Type in your search word, then select Images to use the image search when trying to put a picture to your term.
Get a definition. If you want a definition without having to track down an online (or a physical) dictionary, just type “definition:word” to find the definition of the word in your results (i.e.: “definition: serendipity” will track down the definition of the word “serendipity”).
Search within a specific website. If you know you want to look up Babe Ruth in Wikipedia, type in “site:wikipedia.org Babe Ruth” to go directly to the Wikipedia page about Babe Ruth. It works for any site, not just Wikipedia.
Search within a specific kind of site. If you know you only want results from an educational site, try “site:edu” or for a government site, try “site:gov” and your search term to get results only from sites with those web addresses.
Search for a specific file type. If you know you want a PDF (or maybe an MP3), just type in “filetype:pdf” and your search term to find results that are only in that file type.
Calculate with Google. Type in any normal mathematical expressions to get the answer immediately. For example, “2*4″ will get you the answer “8.”
Time. Enter “what time is it” and any location to find out the local time.
Find a term in a URL. This handy trick is especially useful when searching blogs, where dates are frequently used in the URL. If you want to know about a topic for that year only and not any other year, type “inurl:2009″ and your keyword to find results with your keyword in URLs with 2009 in them.
Use Show Options to refine your search. Click “Show Options” on your search result page to have access to tools that will help you filter and refine your results.
Search for a face. If you are looking for a person and not just their name, type “&imgtype=face” after the search results to narrow your results to those with images of faces.
Google Specifically for Education
From Google Scholar that returns only results from scholarly literature to learning more about computer science, these Google items will help you at school.
Google Scholar. Use this specialized Google search to get results from scholarly literature such as peer-reviewed papers, theses, and academic publishers.
Use Google Earth’s Sky feature. Take a look at the night sky straight from your computer when you use this feature.
Open your browser with iGoogle. Set up an iGoogle page and make it your homepage to have ready access to news stories, your Google calendar, blogs you follow in Google Reader, and much more.
Stay current with Google News. Like an electronic clearinghouse for news, Google News brings headlines from news sources around the world to help you stay current without much effort.
Create a Google Custom Search Engine. On your own or in collaboration with other students, put together an awesome project like one of the examples provided that can be used by many.
Collect research notes with Google Notebook. Use this simple note-taking tool to collect your research for a paper or project.
Make a study group with Google Groups. Google Groups allows you to communicate and collaborate in groups, so take this option to set up a study group that doesn’t have to meet face-to-face.
Google Code University. Visit this Google site to have access to Creative Commons-licensed content to help you learn more about computer science.
Study the oceans with Google Earth 5. Google Earth 5 provides information on the ocean floor and surface with data from marine experts, including shipwrecks in 3D.
